INTRO TO DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY

COURSE OVERVIEW

Aims
Introduction to Digital Technology is a foundation course for the Creative Media Production, Graphic Design, Media and Communications and Mass Communications pathways. This course is designed for secondary school students to understand, communicate and adapt to a digital world as it impacts their personal life, society and the business world. It will expose students to foundation knowledge in hardware, software, networks, and IT support. Learners will be required to identify, describe, evaluate, select and use appropriate technology. Various forms of technologies will be highlighted to expose students to the emerging technologies impacting the digital world and the legal and ethical constraints which impact on them. 

Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, a learner will:
1. Identify, describe, evaluate, select and use appropriate technology.
2. Understand, communicate and adapt to a digital world.
3. Explain the basic components of computer networks.
4. Describe, analyse, develop and follow policies for managing ethical and legal issues in a technology-based society.

Choosing the right computer

Your grandmother just retired from her job and wants use part of her gratuity payment of $50,000TT to buy a computer for herself, you and your brother, Kevin. She wants you to choose the best type of computer for each of you. Also, Granny plans to go on a cruise to the Mediterranean and wants to take her computer device with her. Meanwhile your brother Kevin wants to become a filmmaker and is anxious to make HD movies that he can upload to Youtube and Vimeo or submit to film festivals. Using the list below of the latest computer devices on the market, from online website TechradarCreate a report in which you: recommend a suitable computer for you, your grandmother and Kevin based on each of your needs outlined above. Explain why you recommend each of these choices.

Green Computing
The Hippocrim Family needs your help. They want to purchase environmentally friendly computer devices.  They are seeking your advice on which manufacturing companies produce such devices.  Access the Greenpeace's Green Ranking - Guide to Greener Electronics website or another comparable website to view the current ranking based on manufacturers.  Create a report to include two names of the manufacturers you would recommend.  Explain why you recommend the manufacturers.
