Required reading before class: Grammar of the Edit – Chapters 1 & 2

WEEK 3
Concepts - Coverage and Basic Shots.
Lecture Overview - Creating sub-clips.

WEEK 4
Editing Grammar - Continuity Editing 
Lecture Overview - When to Cut and Why? Five Types of Edits. Key editing techniques of the film cutting room – Pulling, editing, overlapping, trimming, rolling edit, split edit.
Required reading before class: Grammar of the Edit – Chapter 3-4

WEEK 5
Cutting for Genre: Drama & Suspense
Lecture Overview – Pacing and using long cutting for emotional effect. Key editing techniques of the film cutting room –overlapping, trimming, split edit L-cuts, J-cuts.
Required reading before class: Grammar of the Edit – Chapter 3-4

WEEK 6
Sound – The Other Half of the Story 
Lecture Overview - Dialogue. Cutting dialog scenes and narration. Cutting in sounds effects and music. Preparing tracks for the mix


WEEK 7
Cutting for Genre: News & Documentary Task 1 due (March 07 @ 9:30 am)

LECTURE: SLATING YOUR VIDEOS FOR EXPORT
EXERCISE: Create the title slates for two of your three videos and email to me by 2:00 pm. You are creating only the 5 second slate for each and sending those individually to me.


WEEK 14
Screening of fine cuts in class. Task #2 & #3 due (April 28 no later than 2:00 pm)

WEEK 15
Students work on completing their final cuts and evaluations. Task #4 due (May 05, no later than 1:30 pm)
